Schedule (On hold till further notice)

The Catskill Fire Tower Project, now in its 23nd year, will open for the summer season on Saturday, May 29th. The 5 fire towers that are part of this volunteer project are Balsam Lake, Hunter, Overlook, Red Hill and Tremper. From Memorial Day through Columbus Day on weekends and holidays, volunteers will be on hand from 10am to 4 pm so that visitors can enjoy the views, learn about the fire tower history, and how to safely and enjoyably recreate in the Catskill Forest Preserve.

On Saturday, August xxst, we invite everyone to find a place with a view of your favorite fire tower on the horizon for our 7th annual Lighting of the Fire Towers Event! This event is meant to showcase the history of the five Catskill fire towers and some of our other friends around the state. From 9:00pm to 9:30pm, look up to see the cabs lit up. Remember that these towers were watching faithfully like beacons over your property for years to help prevent forest fires. The men and women who were in those cabs were there to protect your property from forest fires by providing fire fighters with an early detection and reporting system that was very accurate. If you are lucky, your area may have been covered by more than one tower! For additional information about possible viewing areas near you, see this site, and select the 'visibility cloak' option in the top right hand corner of the map. The rain date is the next night.

Aside from this special event, the plan is for the Tower to be staffed every weekend from Memorial Day thru Columbus day. The hours are generally from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Note: Weather may change the volunteer's plans. If in doubt, use the contact email at the bottom.

In General

We hope you can come visit. If funding and weather allows, we have a few projects we hope to accomplish, such as new windows in the tower and new landing boards. Stop by, we are always happy to see visitors and hope to make your visit a pleasant one! Happy Hiking!
